At Northern Fox Valley we are planning our 2010, 20 year anniversary program, 20 for our 20th. The program will be a mix of new construction, rehabs, and our new 'Brush with Kindness' Program. The details of our program will be announced at our 20/20 'kick-off' event on March 4 at our ReStore in Elgin. Come join us at 5PM, for directions click here. We will also be completing our 2009 Historic restoration on Division, see below, and our new Construction on Margaret. A Brush with Kindness Northern Fox Valley is proud to announce the launch of A Brush with Kindness. This program will partner low-income homeowners with Habitat to perform exterior home maintenance at no cost to the homeowner. Projects for 2010 will include painting, landscaping, and yard cleanup. For our first year, we will complete ten projects throughout the area. A Brush with Kindness represents a philosophical shift for Habitat. While building houses remains the foundation of what we do, it has become increasingly important for us to help our neighbors already in their homes. By maintaining existing housing stock, we prevent homes from becoming unlivable. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, “A house saved is a house built”. Application Process Homeowners will be chosen based on need, feasibility of the project, and willingness to partner. As with our new construction and rehabs, residents must perform “sweat equity” hours. Household income must fall within the guidelines below. The paper application will be used to determine if the homeowner is financially eligible. After that, a house visit will be done by Habitat staff to determine if the needs of the homeowner fit within our scope of work. Applications will be accepted from January until ten projects have been approved. Anyone interested should contact our office and ask for Justin Lucas at (847)836-1432 or via email at justin.lucas@hfhnfv.org to discuss a project.

On May 1, Mayor Schock visited the site to kick off the work. The work day saw Elgin staff and firemen beginning the deconstruction effort, working with Habitat volunteer construction leaders and the new homeowner.
The Mayor & our homeowner cut a ceremonial ribbon, a porch comes off and walls come down. We have some great homes this year. Our home on Margaret will emulate a historic farm home to fit into a historic neighborhood.
Thrivent Homes We will do a Thrivent Project in 2010, stay tuned for details.
